What is a cookie?

A cookie is a harmless text file that stores itself on your computer when you visit a web page. This cookie is used so that the site can remember your visit when you return to navigate this page. Although few people know it, cookies have been around for 20 years, ever since the first World Wide Web browsers appeared.

What ISN’T a cookie?

It isn’t a virus, a trojan, a worm, spam, spyware or a pop-up window.

What information does a cookie store?

Cookies do not usually store sensitive information about you, such as credit cards or bank data, photographs, your ID, personal data etc. The information they hold is of a technical nature – personal preferences, personalisation of content etc.

The web server does not associate them with you as a person nor with your browser. In fact, if you usually browse using Internet Explorer and try to navigate the same website with Firefox or Chrome, you will see that the site doesn’t realise that you are the same person because in reality it is associated with the browser, not the person.

What type of cookies exist?

· Technical cookies: These are the most basic. Amongst other things, they enable the site to know when a human or an automated application is browsing and when an anonymous or registered user is is browsing – basic tasks needed for any dynamic web page to function.

· Analysis cookies: These collect information on the type of browsing that is being carried out, the sections that are being used the most, products viewed, timezone of the user, language etc.

· Advertising Cookies: These display adverts based on navigation, country of origin, language etc.

What are own and third-party cookies?

Own cookies are cookies that are generated by the page you are visiting and third-party cookies are generated by external services or providers, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.

What happens if I deactivate cookies?

Here are some examples to demonstrate what can happen if you deactivate cookies:

· You will not be able to share the content of this website on Facebook, Twitter or any other social network.

· The website will not be able to tailor its content to your personal preferences, as is often the case in online stores.

· You will not be able to access the personal area of this website, for instance My Account, or My Profile or My Orders.

· Online stores: it wil be impossible for you to make online purchases. You will need to make them by telephone or by visiting a physical store if one exists.

· You will not be able to personalise your geographical preferences such as timezone, currency or language.

· The website will nto be able to carry out web analytics on users and web traffic, which will make it difficult for it to be competitive.

· You will not be able to write in the blog, submit photos, publish comments, evaluate or rate content. Nor will the website be able to tell if you are a human or an automated application publishing spam.

· The website will not be able to show sector-specific advertising which will reduce the advertising revenue of the site.

· All social networks use cookies. If you deactivate them you will not be able to use any social network.

Can you delete cookies?

Yes. You can not only delete them but you can also block them, either generally or for a specific domain.

To delete website cookies you need to go to your browser preferences and find those that are associated with the domain in question, then delete them.
